Palo Alto, CA April 13th, 2014: Stanford was the host of the semi-finals and finals this last weekend to determine the champions of the Pacific West Rugby Conference. The winner will automatically qualify in the sweet 16 USA Rugby 2014 15’s National Title Competition.

On Saturday the Stanford Cardinal battled the Spartans of San Jose State University in the first semi-final. The Spartans held strong in the first half with the score 17-3 by half time and they came out and scored quickly on the Cardinals with their first try of the match. Stanford answered right back and scored a try of their own. In the end. the pressure both offensively and defensively was too much for the Spartans to handle and Stanford ran away with the scoring and ending with a victory 43 to10.

In the second semi-final, Chico State Wildcats played against University of Nevada, Reno Wolfpack. Chico State made a statement with scoring 24 points in the first half and keeping the Wolfpack off the scoreboard. This match was a hard hitting match with some huge tackling on both sides but the Wolfpack just did not find the answers on how to stop Chico State. The Wildcats went on to finish off the UNR with a score of 68 to 5.

On Sunday, the consolation match had San Jose State versus UNR. This match is where both teams matched tries until in the last ten minutes with UNR being up by ten points. The Spartans came roaring back and scored the winning try with no time left. The Spartans came in third by beating UNR 46 to 41.

In the final, Chico State took on Stanford. This match was back and forth with Chico State staying close all match. It was a match of solid defense and big runs but at the end of half Stanford had a narrow lead. In the second half, a couple of execution mistakes by Chico cost them two tries as Stanford was slowly pulling away. Chico came back with a last minute try and conversion but time was not on their side and the Stanford Cardinal won the match 24 to 18. Stanford becomes the 2nd champion of the Pacific West Rugby Conference and had an excellent season of being undefeated.
